what are your other concerns? maybe, just like “where the servers are”, something can be done about them.
what do you mean when you say AI “listens” to conversations, is that different than your smartphone “listening” for you to say “hey google”? do you turn your phone off during therapy?

@nprofile…s50v ok, I understand what you said, you said "renting a computer to aid in writing code is not the same as fully participating in open source by writing the code yourself", did I get it right?
if so, I continue stating, "how come?", what about renting a computer makes the participation weaker than writing code by hand? are people who use compilers weaker participants because they piped their thoughts thru a bot?

@nprofile…s50v what do you mean with "self transformation", for the new code to be a net improvement, or for the PR to be authored by the same "entity" who wrote the code? or maybe something else? -- I have a hard time judging the good faith of someone's FOSS contribution by just looking at the tools they used to make it.

@nprofile…cfuw @nprofile…7hjs @nprofile…pk04 i completely agree, most value derived from LLMs I get it’s not due to the concrete knowledge it has, but on the associations it makes on things. I use it as a thinking tool, i’m autistic so i just give it a bunch of thoughts and it helps me put them in order.
A local stale LLM would do just fine, if I could actually host it at home.
Incidentally, it’s worth remembering that at some point computer made 3d graphics or movies were science fiction, in part due to cost.

@nprofile…qdk8 I'm really glad that you've overcome long covid and no longer consider assisted dying. I'm sorry about the struggles you've had.
I'm chiming here to share the perspective that assisted dying IS a way of taking care of *some* people. The problems you mention on housing, food, etc are all real, -- but to some, assisted dying is indeed their best path forward.
Ultimately, if the life is actually yours, you should be in control of ending it.

Today is my last day at Shopify. I joined in 2016 and had the time of my life, great engineering and people, they brought me to Canada and for that I’ll be eternally grateful. But they’re also proudly hosting swastikas for sale, taking the idea of “make commerce better for everyone” a little too literal, at any cost. It pains me to leave this way but I can’t let my name be associated with this in good conscience.
If you want to sell Swastikas online, Shopify will be happy to facilitate that.

When I was 12 I learned that my best friend (and his family) were a supporters of him, my friend told me anyone who commits a crime should be killed immediately, and that’s the only way to be safe. I’ll never forget that moment, before I thought we shared the same values, could never see him again the same way.
