So, @npub1rk6…hv4q is definitely pretty great, but wow there are some pretty serious problems to tackle with the frontend. My Dashboard, which has 4 cards, loads *23*MB of stuff (mostly JS). The core JS alone (in 2 files it looks like) is over 7MB!
There’s a JS file for the weather widget which I don’t even have enabled. Every app installed seems to load its own JS even when I’m on the Dashboard.
I get that it’s a challenge as it’s sort of an everything platform that anyone can write apps for so you need to account for that, but all this whoopla about the latest version being so much faster, but my poor browser still has to parse over 20MB of JS on the landing page is wild.
It really needs a coordinated effort on their frontend. I’d love to have a chat with a NC developer who can explain why it’s like this and what the challenges are here. It’s a pretty big problem to just jump in as a contributor w/out a more wholistic understanding. (definitely something I’d love to work on though)

Time to look for work! I’m a software engineer / web developer looking for work. 🧑🏼‍💻 Yep, another day, another dev without a job.
I enjoy building focused and intentional software that is fast and frictionless for people. Software should be accessible for the widest group of people, whatever their current capabilities.
Primarily, I focus on the frontend, whether that’s way up front with HTML, CSS, Javascript, or building pages from the server with C#, PHP, or NodeJS tools. But I’m also experienced in the backend layer working with APIs and databases. Let me know what you need and I’ll be honest if I can do it, can learn it, or you need someone else.
I live in Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿 and will take contract or full-time work. As I’m originally from the USA 🇺🇸, I believe I can be employed by companies here, there, or Australia 🇦🇺 without piles of paperwork. That said, tech work can be remote worldwide 🌍, so don’t be shy!

I haven’t used Windows in years. Would you say that MacOS or one of the mainstream flavours of Linux is closer in usability to it? Not talking about “can you do X on Linux”, but which OS would be most familiar for your non-techie relative to switch to from Windows?

Really nicely detailed! How is infrastructure (electricity, internet) still running and managed?
Generally in news reports, photos are framed to show the massive destruction. This makes it look like literally every building has been levelled. This is why I ask about infrastructure - and also food and money. How is any of that moved, stored, maintained? Or are there areas that haven't been completely destroyed that can function?

also included: free bike racks that require an app to use and designed so you can't secure to them w/normal locks. 😡

I would think that usage falls under Fair Use.
- Not being used commercially or as part of the site disign.
- Small/low res so can't be reprinted
- You could probably claim educational/reporting/research purposes of use
- Apparently covers have copyright as part of the book, making the usage a very minor portion of the whole ( see #2 here: https://psu.libanswers.com/faq/336502 )

I read a blog post today that was happily explaining how you can use built-in browser APIs to do form validation. Right out of the gate the example used was
`<input required={true} />`
Uh oh. That’s not a plain browser API.
Further down was code to customise validation using `setCustomValidity()` except everything was wired up using React (I think), not vanilla JS.

No wait, it was React because the complex example imported from “react”. There was no talk about using vanilla JS or acknowledgement that this code required a framework.
Please, do not do this in your how-to’s unless you are explicit about the requirements. (2/2)

What does this look like? A group of people all with control over a server running various apps, and a legal framework to ensure they all have that control so one person stepping away doesn’t close it down? Along with a way to make sure decisions are made an enacted as a group? (1/2)

This is in iOS 18. From testing and feedback, it was discovered that this *only* effects phones located in the EU.
