I've been investigating Petasites in the local area.
I found:
1. Winter Heliotrope, P. fragrans.
Quite invasive around here.
2. Japanese Butterbur, P. japonicus.
Bigger leaf, also quite invasive, shady boggy areas.
3. Hybrid butterbur, P hybridus.
Large more elongated leaf with jagged edges. Found in the river & along its banks in the shade.
4. Siberian Ligularia, Ligularia sibirica.
Not a Petasites species, leaf looks quite similar. Found in someone's compost heap!

I've had two of their leaflets through my door now, addressed to me, despite being signed up for no advertising to the MPS, DMA and D2D Royal Mail.
Maybe political parties get a free hand to take names from the electoral register, but afaik ReformUK Ltd are a private limited company, which makes this direct marketing material.
Anyway: bastards.

Its a good question, hard to answer. Making people care? I think such people would exist on a normal curve: a minority would never care, no matter what they experience, a minority up the other end would always care, without any personal trauma to initiate empathy.
The majority under the curve would suffer varying degrees of empathy. I've learned this: most people only tend to change when they are forced to due to circumstances.
I don't think there is a clear answer.

I think it depends on two things:
1. How many Reform voters erroneously support them as a potential genuine political alternative compared to supporters who just hate immigrants.
2. Which is stronger: the ideological power of people in a democratic vote or the lobbying power of big money, media and social media to influence votes.

Starmer will most likely do what he always does: try to sit on the fence. To promote the narrative that he's standing firm against Trump's bullying whilst actually facilitating US aggression in the background in order to appease him.
The trouble with sitting on the fence is that its impossible to keep your feet out of the shit on either side of it for having the fence post shoved up your arse.

Ants?
Can anyone advise me about ants?
I have a bed on the allotment currently covered in plastic sheeting, which ants have decided to build a nest under.
I want to add another level to the bed and top it up with soil, but I don't want to destroy the nest.
What is the best way to re-locate the nest? Can I just remove the sheet and hope that they de-camp to a less exposed spot?
NB. There is much less activity under there than a couple of weeks ago.

The allotment in spring. A whole load of fresh cut beech woodchip put down. My brother dragged it all out of the woods where they cut fallen trees. An hour each bin load on the trolley! I told him he didn't need to, but he insisted. Free exercise.

Just been up to the allotment. I spent two days moving 20 barrow loads of woodchips up there. I dumped it on my land but outside of the fence as I hadn't room for it inside.
Anyway, some enterprising soul has helped themselves to all of it overnight.
It's probably best that I couldn't find any track or trace of where it's gone or who did it. Don't appreciate being stolen from, even something as inconsequential as this.
