Turns out it is not the PSU, it's the motherboard 😢
Although this has actually been a rather satisfying mystery to solve. I wound up doing the "paper clip test" on the PSU to confirm that it works, and then used a multimeter to do a connectivity check to confirm that the power and reset switches are working, then I shorted the power switch pins on the motherboard to simulate pushing the power button and poof, nothing happens.

Gotcha, I see. (Did you hear about the PSF's refusal of a large grant from the US government? I think that's the main driver behind their fundraising push.)
Personally I'm reserving judgment on whether the quality drops; I think it depends very much on how they're treating AI contributions, and in particular the level of human review they are being subjected to.

On a separate note, I'm curious about the legal aspects of this issue. (with the understanding that neither of us are lawyers, of course) Under US law I'd expect that even if Python incurs legal liability for including AI output in its code base, that liability wouldn't extend to other projects that depend on Python. Is it different in Australia?

I've heard speculation that PyPy is unmaintained... https://github.com/numpy/numpy/issues/30416 is the best source I know of, and I see there was a recent statement of intent to support Python 3.12 which would suggest that it is in fact maintained, but I dunno if that comment really addresses the issues that made people wonder about the status of PyPy in the first place. So we'll have to see what happens.

I used to be a moderator on PSE and, if I remember correctly, Physics Overflow was a competing site run by some of the people who, shall we say, most frequently clashed with us mods. httpx is indeed the most common recommendation I've gotten for an async-capable equivalent of requests, although I don't think it qualifies as a drop-in replacement.
The alternative might be to use worker threads in Textual, if you can't switch to use httpx.
Although I'm sure there would be a lot of interest in a Mastodon client library that could be used asynchronously... 😁

Well what I was saying is that mypy in strict mode (or an equivalent) plus Pydantic gets you most of the way toward solving the type consistency problem, but it's not always enough. Particularly when you have untyped dependencies.

Pydantic isn't the kind of thing I was thinking of. It does runtime type checking for its own data types, whereas I'm thinking of a package that does some AST hacking or something on that level to validate type hints at runtime *everywhere* in the program. Or at least, that's the idea.
Personally I've found it pretty effective to use strict type enforcement (like mypy --strict), along with validating the type of all external data coming into the program (which Pydantic can help with), and a few strategically placed assertions to shore up the gaps. With that combination I don't generally miss a strict type system.

Not for everybody. My experience has been nearly the opposite: almost every time I've gotten in a slump it's because I tried reading something unusual for me that I would up disliking, and almost every time the way I broke out of it was by coming back to read something familiar that I knew I'd like.

Nice post, but... I have a bone to pick. Not with you specifically, it's just that this is one of many posts I've seen that seem to present self-contained scripts as something that uv made possible, and it's not. It was made possible by a bunch of packaging standards, and pip-run (and IIRC pipx) were able to do this for months before uv implemented support for it, and I think it's a shame that that work isn't acknowledged more broadly.

IMO this is not a reasonable thing to expect of people. Boosting a post comes with a cost that liking doesn't, namely the attention of one's followers. There's a big difference between "I like this" (or "I'm glad you posted this" or "I empathize" or any of the other various meanings of liking) and "people who follow me will want to see this". Plus, there can easily be too many posts crossing my timeline (using myself as an example) that would be of interest to my followers and I might want to limit my boosts to only the most interesting ones or a particular mix of topics or so on.
(The snarky response, of course, would be that I'm happy to stop liking your posts unless I also boost them, but TBH I don't even think I could remember to do that.)

Yeah that's understandable.
If you want to just never post negative reviews, have at it, but if you'd like to find a way to think about it differently... what kind of works for me is to think about the readers who will pick up the book, not like it, and be sad, when they might have known better if I'd posted a negative review.

There's nothing wrong with posting a negative review of a book, and in fact it can be very helpful to other potential readers if it explains why you didn't like it.
Of course if any individual reader preferred to only post reviews that are positive, that's up to them, but it's not like posting a negative review is a breach of etiquette or anything like that.

A very minor rant, if @npub1ny7…uv57 will indulge me:
I was doing the January Pages Challenge from #TheStoryGraph - read at least one page every day of the month - but there was one day I missed because I stopped reading just before midnight the day before and then started reading just after midnight the day after. I'm mildly annoyed that the challenge isn't a bit more flexible, but it's fine, the terms were clear and I knew what I was getting into, and I don't really care that much about completing challenges in general.
However, I hadn't realized how much that daily goal was motivating me to read. So my gripe is how, now that I'm out of the running for this particular challenge, that whole portion of motivation is just gone. Unlike a goal of pages or books, where if I slack off for a while I still have reason to make up for it until the end. (Of course I still have the motivation that the books I'm reading are pretty good and I'm enjoying them, but that was there regardless.)

I guess so, although something about that particular phrasing makes it come across to me as condescending. (probably the "have fun", if I had to guess) I guess there's nothing that will work for everyone 🤷
My normal approach is to block/mute and say nothing, but if I do make any sort of acknowledgement it's usually along the lines of "I have nothing more to contribute to this discussion" or "this will be my last reply on the topic", and then if they continue to reply and are rude, that's when I go for the block/mute.

Libraries are awesome indeed, but for what it's worth, I've heard some concerning rumors about what the company behind Libby (OverDrive) is doing to libraries - things along the lines of abusing their market dominance to charge libraries exorbitant fees for the right to lend out e-books through the app. I can't remember the details, so don't take my word for it, but maybe keep an eye out for more information about this.
Librarians who I've talked to generally seem to think Hoopla is a little better (or, more library-friendly at least).

Do you have equery (app-portage/gentoolkit) installed? It answers these questions pretty easily, no need for wanton updating. `equery depends sys-apps/systemd`
It might be worth masking systemd too, so if something ever does try to pull it in again, Portage will warn you about it. (At least I think that's how masking is supposed to work, but I haven't actually encountered that situation in a while so I don't remember for sure)

In principle I agree with you, a list comprehension is strictly better than list(map()), but the consequences of this are so tiny I can't really get worked up about it.

Agreed! I'm pretty convinced that attaching almost any sort of expectation to #reading is likely to push away people for whom it doesn't work, more than it will help people for whom it does work.
On the other hand, it's really easy to reframe a lot of these expectations as suggestions, i.e. "Here are some things you could try".

Just started properly learning #Rust and I am inordinately happy that the first thing the book tells you to do (after installing Rust) is copy and paste some code into a text file, compile the text file, and run the executable 😀
No elaborate project setup, no configuring an IDE with environments or dependencies or any of that. I mean, all that stuff is great for more complex software projects, but when you're just starting out, it should be plain and simple, text editor and terminal.
