I decided to start with the vertex specification of the billboarded instanced objects: crabs, clouds, leaves, and stars.
It would appear that, after compacting everything together, I can make it work with
- vec2 aVertPos;
- mat4 aModel;
- vec4 aInfo;
where aInfo is either a color, or a small bundle of crab info, or a set of random offsets in the case of stars
currently my cylindrical billboarding method for crabs is on the CPU, thus the mat4 model instead of a simple vec4 worldPos. I might take a stab at doing it GPU side depending on what I find in terms of performance. I'm not sure whether it's preferable doing billboard calculations on every vertex or passing in 3 more vec4s than I actually need

first step is identifying what kinds of things can be sorted together. There are 3 different GL calls I use to draw things currently: glDrawArrays, glDrawElements, & glDrawArraysInstanced
With an additional distinction made for billboarded vs 3d objects as well as certain special cases like post-processing passes, which sort of have to be their own thing.
In the absolute most wildly optimistic case, I could cut the number of shader programs down by 9, and if I made fruits a billboarded object I could make that 10. When I consider that I currently have 22, that marks a significant change.
Even if I were being very conservative and cut it in half, I think a 1/4 improvement in shader program count is still pretty good.

on the other hand, I could just have all the renderable things do their Render() call in Graphics::Update() in the correct order and it becomes implicit and all the bookkeeping is done in the program text itself

maybe it should be more like
shader -> queue<callback>
that way things are still organized by shader, but the callback can be owned by the system and control uniforms and anything else it needs

at some point i should really clean up my use of shaders
right now each system has its own shader that it owns and all rendering code is controlled by that system
but obviously that means for N systems we have N shaders which means N gpu state changes
which is bad and it sucks
but fixing it means I have to generalize the shaders I have and consolidate them together in a way that makes sense and is efficient and also still adheres to the systems-first procedural approach I've been doing
likely it'll just be moving the generalized shaders to be part of the graphics system, and maybe maybe some sort of a map of shader->queue<drawn_obj> which is then iterated through each frame in the graphics system to minimize swapping shaders

exactly! If done properly, you will simply forget that you are there and experience things directly. To be thankful, to be with others, to experience joy and beauty, without ever thinking "what would others say about me" or "well I'm better than that" or any of the other intrusive thoughts about one's peers - it's a wonderful thing.
I see people sometimes talk about "giving up control" but that's not it exactly. You still know right and wrong, and you still make decisions, and you're still you, you just don't think about it and what flows naturally from you is the best of yourself.
Case in point; I just called my parents early for 4th of July, and had the best conversation I may have ever had with them because I managed to be self-forgetful in that way. I am often awkward in my conversation (my timing, my word choice, etc etc) but on this occasion everything snapped into place like it was meant to be
