@nprofile…6srv because I often end up looking at a different version of the source code than the one the binary was built from.
Either I'm looking at the latest version on a public forge, or at a local git clone of the upstream repo that may or may not be on the same commit.
So not only the line numbers likely won't match up, but also the code I'm looking at may already have a fix for the bug I'm looking for.
So being reminded of which version I should be reading would be very helpful.

I can see how the function name could help. I don't remember encountering a situation where the error message wasn't unique, I could've forgotten it though.
Regarding line numbers - I think putting an abbreviated git commit hash in every log message would be a better use of space.

what's the purpose of including the function name in a runtime error message?
Naively, I'd think that it's to find the place in the code that printed the error message.
But I can usually do that just by grepping the error message in the repo... do people have so generic error messages that the same string can appear in more than one place in the code?

Random reflection:
The most valuable information about a piece of code, or a patch, is not how it works. Or why it works. Or who wrote it.
The most valuable information is why it was done in that way in particular.
Did someone implement it the first way they came up with, without giving it much more thought?
Did the author know a better way, but was in a hurry so knowingly used a quick workaround?
Or is there a very subtle reason that this has to be done this way that took days to discover?

What if I have a chunk of memory with a bunch of counters that are being constantly updated by another thread, and I want to make a private copy of it (doesn't have to be consistent as a whole, only each counter needs to be internally consistent) to read at my leisure, without the other cores' writes pushing it out of my cache?
Not a real case where I found this to be a bottleneck, just wondering what are the possibilities.

If you tell a CPU to load a word from memory into a register, and then proceed to not use that register for a few tens of instructions, it'll run those instructions before the load has finished, right?
But what if he thing you want to prefetch does not fit in a register?

Pretty sure the 3D-vcache is on top of the die that has cores, but yeah this one is off to the side, and the IO die (memory controller + pcie + misc IO) is in the center.
But yeah, I've heard if offset cooler mounts. If it turns out this OC struggles in the summer and I end up buying a better cooler, I'll look into those.

1.04V is the default VSOC btw
Somewhat relatedly, enabling EXPO adds 8W to the idle CPU power draw, and increases temps under full load (prime95 smallFFTs + furmark on iGPU) by like 5°C.
Even if I can't get UCLK to 3000MHz, surely it should be able to do 1500MHz at a way lower VSOC, since it's doing 2400MHz at 1.04V...
Hopefully that would lower the temps?

It sounds like this advice would be great if you have to make a decision in seconds.
But in the office, where you usually can slow down to gain more time to evaluate your options, but management is overeager and wants you to go fast, I think that making them aware of the severity of a problem and reasons why the current approach won't work is half of the work...

Also AFAIK they only ever claimed that the special "secret chat" mode that nobody uses is end-to-end encrypted, the regular chats were never claimed to be end-to-end encrypted, so obviously the server had access to it...

If wireguard wants to be a primitive, a building block in larger solutions, that's fine, but:
- I couldn't find anywhere stating that
- Doing both routing and filtering based on AllowedIPs looks out of place. It's not suitable for any advanced usecase - you end up needing one interface per peer anyway. So it only makes sense as a way to make WG easier to use stand-alone.

Well, wireguard is not much different from GRE orIPIP in that regard, so a tunnel agnostic reachability detection daemon that adds and removes statically configured routes would've been a more universal solution. It could eg. use BFD.
Still, if wireguard is trying to be a "batteries included" type of solution, I'd expect it to have such a feature, at least in the userspace tooling part.

Unix shells tend to show the local hostname in the prompt, so that you see it at all times.
Cities, OTOH, don't have their city name written all over the streets. It's usually written next to major roads when entering the city, but once you're inside, it may be difficult to find out which city you're in.

Yeah, but I don't get why getting damaged in combat would be somehow more virtuous.
And in general, I don't like the surface-level mockery - it seems to imply that US has to be utterly incompetent to let those things happen, which I disagree with.
I think the US is pushing its luck to seize a once-in-a-decade opportunity.
Now, if someone were to argue that there was no chance this would succeed, and US should've known it from the start, that'd be another story.

AFAIK its scheduled maintenance time was in the middle of the Special Maduro Operation.
Also, the US did not exactly choose when to start a war - AFAIU they were in a rush to start it while there's still a potential for protests in Iran.
It seems they're 1 carrier short - if they had one more, they could've sent it to the Gulf to replace Ford, and be able to intervene when the protests were happening, instead of doing that 1.5 months later.

As for per-program balancing - tc-flow classifier can hash locally-originated traffic by socket uid and gid, but sadly not by pid. Also, traffic class can be set using cgroups (see tc-cgroup) but that doesn't sound very useful either.
Unless you use flatpak, I guess.
In any case, the place you want to do traffic shaping is right befeore the bottleneck link, which in most cases is not the link from your computer to the home router...

IIRC torrent clients are only supposed to unchoke four peers at a time... but that might be 4 peers per torrent, so if you have many, yeah, it could get bad.

Jim Gettys in "Traditional AQM is not enough"[1] complains, among other things, that web browsers game TCP fairness by opening 10 or more connections
Later in that article, and also in other articles on that topic, it is claimed that fq_codel is a solution, because it separates flows and gives each one a separate queue
I kinda expected they found a way to treat all TCP connections from one webpage loading as the same flow, but they never said anything about it
