Like, I feel like there’s this whole culture and community of tools and practices for autodidacts and “sensemakers”, and it kinda tilts into this “coy right" cluster with Joe Rogan and rationalist Substackers.

Getting conflicting answers on this, seems like an extremely important question! Suffice to say, if a queer or otherwise marginalized person on a Threads-blocking instance can easily be boosted into the awareness of Libs of Tik Tok, then defederating Threads is insufficient to protect users, and we may see a full schism.

If they can follow what they think they need, in an app that's optimized for the fedi, I'm fine treating that as a nicotine patch. Also I love that Musk would hate it.

It seems to me that the advantage of ActivityPub is more at the level of helping social networks overcome a cold start problem. Right now, anyone who wants to start a new social network can connect with the Fediverse. That’s pretty cool! But federation is usually pitched mainly for its benefits to users, and I think there are other ways to achieve many of those benefits.

One of my favorite features of Old Old Twitter was the with_friends feed. From someone's profile you could literally jump into a view presenting the timeline as they experienced it. There are probably a million problems with this, in terms of computational/bandwidth burden on instances, or safety of users. But even if not that in particular, I think it's worth considering things in that vein.

When you follow someone here you don't necessarily get any sense of their friends. Their replies to people you don't follow are actively hidden. But those relationships are one of the most valuable things for someone here trying to find new people.

Sometimes I'm like, I have relationships with people here. I talk with them, I know them, I trust them and can vouch for them. And I would like to pass that on to new users. Here's a starter pack of cool people. You know? And then, I tell myself, I guess that's what boosts are for. But here's the thing - it's not. I boost things from people I don't follow all the time! That's not vouching for a person, that's just sharing something cool.
