Unfortunately for some, I will be posting more often about ADHD. I will openly discuss the subject and share what I have learned.
Recently, at a party, I had a conversation with a mother whose daughter has ADHD. Initially, she was thought to be unintelligent until she was diagnosed and several measures were taken, such as attending a school with fewer students and taking medication.
During the conversation, this mother made an intriguing comment: She said that she had asked her daughter not to take the medicine. This prompted my question: "May I ask why, since it was prescribed by a professional?"
Her answer: "I've heard it can cause Alzheimer's." When I asked her where she heard that, she said it was from someone she follows on Instagram.
Another person in the conversation emphasized the importance of using reliable sources and peer-reviewed research. I'm not sure if my endorsed comment will have an impact. Hopefully, it will.
I'm not surprised by how people form their opinions on scientific topics, but I'm scared by how easy it is today to spread misinformation and disinformation on important topics.

I had the opportunity to tell the founders of the Sovereign Tech Agency (@npub1yng…nhrk) that I'm a big fan of their organization. I firmly believe that other countries should have similar initiatives. In fact, the EU should have one too.
Their recent €600k+ grant to Mastodon is a great example of what public investment in open digital infrastructure can look like. It strengthens the Fediverse, a real alternative to X. As I’ve argued in the #LeaveX campaign: we already have a viable social media alternative to X (1) and what we lack is sustained funding and political commitment. (2)
Thus, if more EU countries invested in improving Mastodon, how quickly could it become Europe’s de facto public square?
While most European politicians still prefer X for their official communication, reducing technical barriers could attract a more diverse audience, including the people our representatives want to reach, like journalists and the general public.
By the way, it's interesting, though not surprising, that the Sovereign Tech Agency has almost four times as many followers on Mastodon as on Bluesky. It would be great to see them highlighting posts and profiles of some awesome open-source projects active on the Fediverse. 😉

In a recent comparison of engagement around a Leave.X campaign post,[1] someone pointed out that a female journalist who is active in the feminist movement and critical of Big Tech had a very different experience than others.

After about twelve hours, the same post had received more than 300 shares and likes on Mastodon, while it had only been shared three times and liked four times on BlueSky.
I'm no social media expert, but it's amazing how reluctant people are to use Mastodon because of its lack of reach and interaction.
If we bring more people here, the Fediverse could become the de facto public square.

I am sorry for your pain. I asked until recently for some Americans in Berlin how they felt on what is happening to the US, but they didn't seem worried (yet).
I had to stay far from my family during the pandemic, so I understand how difficult it can be. I didn't mean Americans trying to unify to their dearest ones, of course.

Many people left X because it thrives on hate-driven engagement. In terms of reducing hostile and toxic interactions, how much better is the Fediverse, really?
I’ve seen Fediverse enthusiasts mock people who prefer BlueSky, calling them "normies" and speaking with a sense of superiority when defending this space.
Even within the Fediverse, we often get caught up in technicalities, apps, protocols, federation details, and other things that most people simply don't care about. People just want to connect, find community, and read meaningful content.
If we can’t tolerate others choosing different paths or platforms, then we’re reproducing the very behavior that pushed many away from X in the first place.
If we want the Fediverse to grow, we need better technology, as well as more empathy and openness.

Will Mastodon, the platform that keeps the #Fediverse alive, miss a strategic opportunity to bring official institutions on board at scale?
By watching how #EuroSky is being marketed compared to #Mastodon, it certainly seems that way.
I wish the folks at Mastodon would invest in more professional marketing, similar to what we're seeing from its rival, Bluesky.

Someone suggested using Wikidata to get the data from politicians in other countries on the Leave X project. Here is the first query for German politicians

It get's 855 MPs, which is clearly wrong - it should be 735.

The problems I see with using Wikidata are that it has too many duplicates and there is no email address. Also, likely the social medial links are less likely to be up to date. I will possibly have to scrape the Bundestag data, mainly to get the email addresses.
Another reliable data source could be the endpoint of [@a_watch](https://bewegung.social/@a_watch ): https://www.abgeordnetenwatch.de/api
They don't provide emails or social media in their API end points. However, I could check the politicians' social media profiles on the profile pages of this project. I still need to check what's the best solution.

I recently tried Delta Chat (@npub17gp…nrxn ) and found it simple, with a clean and pleasant interface.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about starting a group chat for practicing German. I even created a Matrix group, but now I’m wondering if Delta Chat might be a simpler option.

My impression is that the posts I make about more technical topics tend to get the most interaction here on the #Fediverse. I don’t often post about my daily work as a software developer, but I truly wish decentralized social media will succeed. In my view, that will only happen if non tech-savvy people join... and stay.
I have a wide range of interests: science, philosophy, society, history, politics, cinema, music, and so on. Yet, I often feel it’s hard to find people here who focus on these areas.
Take #science or #journalism, for example. Many scientists and journalists have joined Mastodon at some point, but when you visit their profiles, you often see that they haven’t posted in years.
Should we blame them for deciding, say, to move to #Bluesky instead of staying here and talking mostly to the dominant (tech-oriented) group? I don’t think so.
I’d really love to meet and exchange ideas with more people interested in these topics from different perspectives, especially beyond the tech world. That’s something I enjoy doing in real life too, in a society whose language I’m still learning.

When I was a physics student, Bertrand Russell's ideas were a guiding light for me, and they also helped me improve my English skills.
Yesterday, I tried reading a book I had once given to my father, and I was astonished by how much I could understand compared to German philosophical texts.
I lived in Germany for nearly nine years and in Italy for about a year. What a huge difference when your native language is also a Romance language.

for instance, a key difference in Germany: technical courses after school can afford you a very comfortable life. In Brazil, likely you would struggle financially being a technician.
On the other hand, in Brazil, having a diploma is a dream a better life, although this is not necessarily true. In the 1990s, there was the creation of several thousands of low quality private universities, in parallel to the economic leveraging of a social group that left misery. At the same time, there are the publicly funded universities, which were mostly accessed by those who had a better private education. There were some improvements in this regard, but I believe we still lose several talents to poverty.

I meant the debt created by students. The best universities in Brazil are publicly funded, so students don't need loans to earn a degree. I don't see this problem among students in Germany either.
I can tell you more about Brazil in terms of the meaning and role of universities. There is room for improvement, but the reasons are different.

I’m not part of academia, but I am who I am because of it. Coming from one of the most unequal countries in the world, I was fortunate to study at one of its top universities. I don’t need to list all the doors that opened for me as a result.
I still have friends and contacts in the academic world, and it pains me to see it under threat in a country that has produced so much knowledge and provided opportunities to so many talented people from all walks of life.
I’ve met countless brilliant minds who were able to do their work thanks to academic freedom in the US and the excellence of its research and educational institutions. At this point, we don’t need to focus on the flaws - they are about to become the least of our problems.
Everyone who understands the importance of academic freedom and its role in a democratic society should be deeply concerned.

No, you don’t want the US to collapse. Too many countries depend on it, and a sudden breakdown would create chaos. If you come from the Global South, you might feel more empathy for those harmed by American foreign policy for several decades. But if the world’s most powerful military and economy slides into dictatorship - or worse - the consequences will hit everyone, especially weaker economies and vulnerable people.

I just watched an informative documentary on Arte detailing important aspects of the actual farright government of Israel and some of its key figures: the boss, Netanyahu, the minister of national security and defense, Ben-Gvir, and the minister of finance, Smotrich.

It's available in Germany until the 30th of Oct (why so short, just one month?!).
Ehud Barak, former prime minister of Israel: "Netanyahu had reached the stage of paying for their (Hamas) protection through the Qataris for years, at an average of 1.5 billion dollars, half of which went on military infrastructure to build tunnels.

That's a really bold statement, not surprising tho. Does anyone have more materials to back up this claim?
The documentary covers several other important aspects, but that's a crucial one.

After many years living in Germany, yesterday I was able to donate blood for the first time! I was trying to find a place in Berlin where I could donate having basic German.
I heard from one place I called, with the humor of German bureaucrats, "Sie müssen sehr gut deutsch sprechen!!!" Obviously, I gave up on this place.
So, spontaneously, I decided to go to Alexa Shopping and test my German. I was able to answer basic questions at reception, such as when I ate, how much I drank that day and so on. The receptionist said my German was good enough and gave me some forms to fill in. There were several medical terms I didn't know, so I used Google Translate, which worked well.
I could speak in English with the doctor, although I also tried a bit of German. With the nurse, I could only speak in German, but that was fine too.
I just can't understand why such an essential service can't have forms in English. The costs would be very low and many more people would be able to donate. And I've just received a leaflet explaining the importance of blood donation and the low level of some blood types in blood banks. My type, O+, for instance, is low at the moment and can be used by people of four different blood types.
Come on, Germany, you're better than that.

I'm intrigued by some posts I've seen saying that Mastodon, or more generally the Fediverse, has the same problem with minorities that we find widely on traditional social media platforms, especially the big tech ones like x and meta. I disagree if you compare it to the cases where constantly outrageous posts appear on your timeline harming minorities.
How could technology solve a problem that is inherently caused by human beings? If, at the moment, this federated social media is still not a safe space for minorities, isn't this a good time and a great opportunity to solve the moderation problems while we still have far fewer people active here? Offenders will not cease to exist, and technology can only mitigate the damage they can cause.
We have a big challenge if this is really going to scale.

Suppose someone shared a very interesting thread, or link to an article, on how to improve a use experience when reading her timeline, but I missed because I don't follow this person or no one shared it with me. Or I was simply away the whole day or for some days.
I see the demonization of algorithms in the Fediverse, but my original post just gives an example where I found one app that is useful for me to find news I am interested on.

Got it! Although I use hashtags for almost 20 years on social media, it makes sense I could be muted in the Fediverse. I also follow some topics via hashtags, and it can be annoying to have the same person popping up in my timeline.
It's a different dynamic than adding hashtags to my blog posts, where we used to add. I was used to adding it in order for helping the categorization of my articles, maybe improve the possibility to be better indexed by search engines and other people be able to find it. I remember even about the possibility of having an RSS feed for a specific tag.
I just created a thread related to my post earlier this morning, so it seems more polite to not add the same hashtags again on my following up posts.
In any case, if hashtags are not the proper way to classify a post, possibly it could be possible to add some meta tags automatically created to a post. If the idea of creating some recommended posts based on user interest is a desired feature.

Another thing I'm wondering about is the manual creation of hashtags. If we had an automatic classification of posts based on its text, wouldn't it make the life of the person creating a post and the readability easier?

One of the main reasons I started using Twitter 17 years ago was to find a way to follow people with common interests, who shared things that I couldn't find myself. There was an additional feature that allowed me to interact with them and take part in a conversation.
At first, the timeline was similar to the one we have here, a list of chronological posts from the people I used to follow.
Apart from all the traditional advertising and, in the last years, mostly far-right leaning posts, I think at some point some interesting posts appeared for me, depending on my followers and the posts I liked, shared or commented on. Is this feature bad in itself?

I started using the @npub13fk…z5hw app a few days ago. I could find a profile of the Aeon Magazine (aeon.co) and the Psyche Magazine (psyche.co), digital magazines I usually like.
After a few likes and articles I've read, I've liked some suggestions I've received so far. I don't know what their algorithm is, but I like the interface and to get some reading suggestions based on my preferences. I could also easily find other digital media I didn't know about.
This is something I believe we could do better in apps like Mastodon and the like, but it seems that just the idea of an algorithm is daunting, I suppose due to the abuse of other platforms whose main goal is to profit via people's addiction to the screen.
A well-designed and transparent machine learning algorithm could be used to show us some potential benefits we can have, not only the harm several of us know and want to keep at bay.

You know what would be optimal in terms of an interoperable and decentralized web? That I could start following and interacting with a profile on a platform that uses a protocol different from Activity Pub.
In simple terms, I just want to follow some Brazilian tribes that went massively to Bluesky, and interact with them. Just click a like button, login with my Mastodon account and that's it.
I know there's a bridge possibility, but that's just a workaround. Would it be possible to have different protocols that communicate to each other? Maybe not at this stage, but could different protocols be adapted for that?
I just asked my partner to follow @ap.brid.gy on Bluesky more than 1,5 hour ago, but I still cannot see her profile here. I see my bridged profile even has a few followers on Bluesky, but only my original posts and posts from those who use this bridge are replicated there.

One way of measuring whether Brazilians have embraced a social media is to see which links are sharing memes.
There has certainly been a massive uptake in Bluesky links and screenshots being shared since x was blocked. Have journalists also started embedding Bluesky content in their stories? I haven't seen it yet, but it must be a matter of days.

I liked Writefreely, but there's no possibility of comments. And Ghost seems promising, but it's still in the development phase. I'd like just some clean interface, and that I can install on a little server.

14 years ago, the University of São Paulo tried to create its own social network platform, the Stoa project http://stoa.usp.br (it seems abandoned, they don't even have an SSL certificate).
Indeed, moderation was an issue. As an example, I had my blog and account deleted, because the rector ordered, and I was fired from the development team, due to a misunderstanding. I created a first April joke, that some people believed, and it even ended up in the news. 😂
Be the way, one of the goals of the project was to be federated and we aimed to connect to other educational and research institutes, using some protocol that allowed that.
Today I laugh, but there were some tough cases where some people were advocating violence, and our small team (4-5 developers) had to deal with it. I cannot image how it would be in case of a very active system in a university as big as University of São Paulo, that can have hundreds of thousands, if we allow the alumni to join? Or dozens of thousands, if not. You need a team dedicated to the moderation, which is not trivial.

I wonder why the hell someone decided to create a new protocol for another decentralized social network platform, instead of contributing to Activity Pub, that has been developed for years. Is there some technical reason or it was just the trend to reinvent the wheel, which is common to startups and founders?

I was lazy and didn't analyse how it works, but it seems not all posts appear in this bridge profile. I just checked in the previous link, and I cannot see several posts. It seems like just some malfunctioning workaround.

the more voices in the open knowledge world, the better. The Wikimedia movement has great projects read by millions each year, so I think they have an important role here and it is very aligned with their values. In a decentralized world, we don't need one single leadership.
I'm glad there are great organizations like W3C working on that. The more, the merrier.
