A: Maybe. If that would lead to policies that better serve the general welfare, which I think there is a good argument for, then from a consequentialist standpoint it would seem like a reasonable case to make (tho it would turn polling methodology into a battlefield).
For the record, tho, I'm a sortitionist, as I think that random selection from among the voting age population would give us far better outcomes than the system we have now that selects for scruplelessness.

As Ed Whitfield once said, "Most people think democracy means everybody gets to have a say, and I get to have my way."
That said, I do think that there is a lot of validity in the methodology of Gilens and Page (2014) showing the massive disconnect between popular sentiment as ascertained by polling numbers and political outcomes.

Anybody stepping up to do the actual experiment to find out if all those smart coders are, in fact, fooling themselves? Unlikely, I think. Why would true believers pay for research that might prove them wrong? If they were in it for the sake of scientific knowledge, maybe....but then, we'd be having an entirely different conversation. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof and, "bro, I swear this makes me faster!" isn't that.

For the most part, I think my State Uni profs were just repeating what they had been taught - i.e. boilerplate neoclassical economics - without thinking too much about it. They genuinely thought that they were being "scientific" and would often tell me that "economics is a positive, not a normative, science. We talk about how things are, not how they should be." When I pointed out that that stance was itself a normative one, they were much confused.

Oh, I know (and have read a good bit of your writing), which is why getting a BA in econ was so painful for me. I'm sitting here trying to explain the basics of logic to my f'ing professors (except for my thesis advisor, thank gawd, who was a Marxian).
Me: Wait, so you're saying that if we take $50 from Bill Gates and give it to a homeless guy on the street we can't say that overall welfare has increased?!?

When I tried to make these kinds of arguments as an undergrad (though not in quite these terms) I was always told, "no interpersonal comparisons of utility," which meant in practice that it was impermissible to make any arguments about redistributive policies and social welfare, since Pareto Efficiency demands that no one be made worse off & any adjustments to current resource allocations would make at least one person worse off...so growth is the only answer...according to them.

Shitty. Plasma has a specific setting for turning off the touchpad when typing, so maybe it's a DE thing and not a linux thing? No idea about the battery life and other issues though. I've never owned a new laptop, so battery life on mine has always been low and I've always just assumed it's the age of the battery and not the OS. Not great to find out otherwise 🙄
