This blog post by Winnie Lim is really interesting to me: In mainland China, they've gone beyond 'home combo test for flu/covid/RSV'.
In China, you can ask to have a courier come to your door and swab you, take the swab to a lab for PCR testing, and they give results on 12 different germs!
It's accurate, fast, affordable, you get peace of mind, and if it needs treatment at least you know what to treat.
We could live in a better world.

Aside from water use, there's how much gets absorbed when rain falls. That's important for water tables too.
If I recall correctly, forest can easily absorb 9" of rain per hour. Lawn can absorb I think 5, maybe less. Cropland (as in rows, with bare dirt between the plants) can absorb 1.5.
It depends on root depth, ground cover (like old leaves/mulch), and uneven-ness of terrain. I would guess dense garden plantings could be better than lawn.

The old people in my life were all urged by their doctors to get the flu shot as soon as it came out... in early Sept.
Flu vaccines lose a lot of their effectiveness after about 3 months.
Sept, Oct, Nov = reduced protection starting about now.
I think it's irresponsible to push flu vaccines that early. They should aim for early-mid Nov, or plan to vaccinate the old people twice per winter.

That's also what happened in CT when we finally got a state income tax. All the rich New Yorkers screamed and threatened to move away ... but it turned out they were very attached to "my country house" and really didn't want to settle for a house in NJ. 😜
So the CT budget finally balanced. 🙂

Just by the way, tonight is one of those times that Mastodon is having problems bringing images from other servers. Happens now and then. Usually catches up in a day or so.
Right now I'm seeing everyone's text, but over half the pictures are just colored blurs ...and the alt-text.

Wow, that's a lot of postcards!
What my dance teachers / nurses /doctors always recommended for that kind of over-use was treating with hot and cold, alternating. So 10-20 minutes with a hot-pack, then 10-20 minutes with a cold-pack or bucket of cold water. Reduces swelling, helps you recover faster.

And re-engineering rooms to provide multiple filtered air-flows so we don't need to wear masks any more... is even more unthinkable.
We could prevent so many diseases and ailments, it would more than pay for itself.
But engineering costs THEM money: masks and medicines cost US money.

Best guess I've seen is that they're building an email list to sell for fundraising attempts, or other monetization scheme.
Their alleged timeline is:
1) Get several million sign-ups;
2) THEN start thinking and discussing about possible goals;
3) After getting several million people to agree;
4) Then start planning an actual strike.
That allows two years at least before they have to show even attempts at actually doing anything. Lots of time to make money!

Livestock don't have to be fed primarily on crops. Plenty of heirloom breeds live mainly on grass and foraged nuts and so forth.
And the Plains Indian tribes knew better than to plant fields on the plains -- they hunted for protein because buffalo were part of the natural ecology, and hunting buffalo was less de-stabilizing than crop farming. White men learned the hard way with the Dust Bowl.

Some library online catalogs have a feature where once you look up a book, it can show the books just before and after it on the shelf (going by call numbers). This means you can virtually browse along the shelf.
And since nonfiction is sorted by subject area, it's a way to see all the books on that general topic, even if they don't have exactly the same major-topic "subject" terms you searched for.

It's not just you.
I suspect the trend for heavy window tint is also a factor. Dark windows mean less light comes in, so the outside light has to be unreasonably bright in order for the driver to get a reasonable view.

Haven't seen that stat myself, but I would guess the "state funded health care and childcare" help to reduce the stress on the marriage.
Here in the US, one common reason for divorce is that the woman is the only one taking care of the children and figures if she's doing it alone, why not BE alone. A free, reliable outside source of childcare would make a big difference.
And major illnesses (like cancer) often lead to divorce, here.

Good news - researchers in the UK found that potato stems contain fibers similar to cotton fibers. This could become a new source of material for textiles. Since the stems are currently treated as a waste by-product of potatoes, we wouldn't need to use any new land or water for this new source of fiber! We might be able to reduce the resources used to grow cotton.
A team is working on making thread from 75% cotton / 25% potato, to use in existing machinery.
