I think it's the rotten currency we work for now more than the ethic of working over seeking comfort.
If everyone was productive & nobody stole from workers by debasing the currency, there wouldn't be this prevalent idea of scarcity. There's more than enough resources here for the people to exist in peace.
I love SE Asian Buddhist culture but I see it getting diluted by the worship of fiat. This was disturbingly apparent the last time I visited Thailand. The people still had a slight detachment from physicality but there was an underlying need to keep the fiat rolling in. I got the feeling that you could essentially do anything as long as you were able to pay the fee/fine. There were plenty of westerners over there living like disgusting kings on their foreign currency.
