I've noticed when I'm investigating a bug I'm not only trying to find where the problem is happening and how the code, as written, works but also trying to infer what it was designed to do regardless if the code follows it or not. It is a meta model of the code, so it might fall outside what you consider a "programmer's 'mental model' of code."
