yes, they are more pricey than their competitors. A lot of it is due to the tech of the screen hardware itself: it's reflective vs emmissive. I haven't seen anything else on the market that has both the refresh rate of an iPad (quick zoom in/out with no lag), and be able to see perfectly in full sunlight.
Just a tablet currently, but I think their next move will be smaller devices like a phone. They have been focusing on parents/children more recently to help get ahead of tech addiction (schools giving children addictive devices at younger and younger ages), while still providing tech literacy with a non-addictive device/screen/software.
