I never thought much about character selection back then, being able to have a female avatar was a 'nice to have' but often as not I just picked a male one as was fewer button presses and decisions to make

That said I have never played MMORPGs so having to create a character that reflected who I wanted to represent myself as being, in a game has never been an issue
