Thanks for the article - I disagree with his view that this is so different from Segwit activation. Yes it started with 30% of the hashrate, but that's still not a majority. In my view hashrate will follow where the nodes lead.
Whether the 2017 UASF was ultimately decisive or not has been litigated endlessly. I remember listening to a Stephan Livera interview with Luke Dashjr around 2021 arguing it was. Others disagree, but it's not like this game theory is extremely well tested either way. There has been exactly one fork war before this.
Ultimately I don't think this debate matters too much though - It will be definitively resolved by events in about a months time anyway.
