Unfortunately things that are free tend to fizzle out overtime, the only ones that will last long term are the ones where you are the product.

I see nothing wrong with “doing it for profit” as long as you are doing it ethically.

ideally clients could be profitable so they could hire marketing people, etc to continue to grow the network. it's not about "doing it for profit" for profit sake. the profit allows you to continue to work on it and to hire marketing people to grow it.
