One area where consumers can get a variety of high-build-quality appliances is sewing. industrial sewing machines are a different category from home sewing machines, but the differences is not so much a high gulf in build quality, but a difference in functionality. These devices are performing different tasks. But an extremely well-built and repairable entry level sewing machine costing £400 can easily be found.
Contrast with other consumer product areas (like cars!) where the only exemplars built to reasonable engineering standards are antiques.
