Fascism can be quite well understood as a form of mass clinical narcissism (at least on a tactical level). They're desperate for attention, any attention, negative attention will do if they can't get adoration. Their self image is far more important than even their own lives (they are the dad who shoots the kids and his wife when they try to leave). The very idea they might just be average people and not special snowflakes sends them into a meltdown. It's also the whole abuser who thinks and feels they're the world's most victimized person ever type of grandiosity beloved of clinical narcissists.
