I just realised in requesting a copy of your art paper that I may be asking the wrong question. Is it possible that there was a store of folk stories that provided the rationale for the images your have described, but was nudged out with xtianisation?
Which raises the further question about what anyone ever knew about art outside the churches or their mansions?
