At one point I followed the line of thinking that if everyone were required to identify themselves to use social media, the issue of misinformation, online harassment, and some fraud-related problems could be more easily mitigated.
I still think that way to some extent.
I understand that the counter-argument related to the need for anonymity to guarantee security is quite compelling and important. And it is precisely this that convinces me not to fully embrace the idea of identification at all times.
I think there are other ways to whistleblow besides an annonimous social media profile. This is an extremely serious and complex issue, and of course, I am not proposing to exhaustively or resolve it in two paragraphs of text.
Perhaps that's why my thoughts constantly go back and forth on this subject.
