Duracell is interesting, though other companies may now be higher quality.
Starts 1920s by work of Samuel Ruben and Philip Mallory, and the formation of the P. R. Mallory Company.
Mallory developed the mercury cell and invented the button/coin package, used since 1930s.
Eveready developed the Alkaline cell, but decided it was too expensive & Mallory licenced it.
Approx 1968 the UK stopped UK Ever Ready (spilt off 1908) buying Mallory, which became Duracell.
