we do limited tilling - only to break up really hard ground. Mostly, we use a ton of compost, grass clipping, & straw to amend the soil.

In areas of poor soil, we've done straw bale gardening. The 1st year, varied crops grow on the bales. The 2nd year, the bales break down onto mounds we grow potatoes in. The 3rd year, the bales are mulch.

That system might work in Florida.
