I guess I depends on who makes it, but similar to yoghurt, kefir seems to have a lot of added sugars that aren't needed. That's why make our own of both here now. I don't do the kefir myself, but we got curds or starter (forget what it's called) from a site ghislaine from here recommended. I can find the site again with some archive digging. It can't be that hard because my sister in law is retarded and still somehow manages to make it.
