I'm not convinced. They still avoid the worst of the conditions forced on the general population. I would suggest that if you looked at the split of who was in the trenches in WWI versus who was an officer miles away from the horrors, there would be a clear split.

What war can do is make it clearer to people that they are being shafted and make them more combative about it (e.g the Kinder Trespass).
