It's a good article, but IMO the author makes the mistake of thinking that "the cultural mainstream IS reality".
It's not.
Innovation hasn't been hollowed out, it's just gone underground and been relegated to hobbyists who like to PLAY with things and build cool stuff. WHY? Because we CAN.
Really, it's MONEY that's hollowed mainstream innovation out, so if you want to find the real stuff, just go where the money ISN'T.
