One of my favorite en route overnight stops when I traveled from Washington to Arizona every winter was at a wilderness area off of Route 93 south of Alamo, Nevada. When I first started going there I’d pull into a campsite right along side of lake full of waterbirds it was peaceful and nice and dark at night. No fee! The last time I stopped there, they finally put a fee program into place. $10, I think. Worth it.
