I came into mining pretty late, so I definitely missed the early Bitcoin CPU and GPU days. Around 2017 I was mining Dash and other X11 coins with GPUs, not Bitcoin. Even then, getting the right hardware was not always easy for me. What I am doing with CPU mining now is very different. I am not trying to compete with ASICs or run a laptop 24/7. Most of my mining sessions are experiments and rarely last more than an hour or two. I am building my own miner mainly to understand how the algorithms, Stratum, shares, difficulty and the whole mining process actually work under the hood. And yes, when I start testing with all the threads, the laptop definitely lets me know about the heat 😂 So I would say I am tuning for learning first, then speed. I just wish I had the opportunity and hardware to experience more of the earlier mining era like you did.
