We shouldn't be let down if an open social platform doesn't attract billions of users. If you need to reach more than a million then you might qualify as Big Tech yourself. Let me clarify, I'd love for billions to be in the fediverse, but in a much more distributed way. That's the whole point to me. Capable of reaching most but not wanting Mass Media or Big Tech reach. And I think those ideas will (I hope) permeate more than Open Social, but future business and ownership of all kinds.
