Not to sound rude, sorry if I do, but it's only using the Google play services you have already installed on your phone to generate a map picture. It's not like it's going further than a standard android phone, it's instead just using the APIs available.
If you don't have Google play services installed, it can't make the request.
I agree, it would be nice to have it default to something OSM based... But it's not really a huge privacy disaster
