The Android kernel is Linux, with a few extra features patched in. So I think they just built a whole pile of open source software from source and it just works.
I wonder if there is a way to get #Nix running on there, because these days I'm finding it's a much nicer way to tame fugly build environments: https://nixos.wiki/wiki/Android
