I'm pretty sure the Sydney Trains network has some sort of awareness of where each train is because when you check AnyTrip (GTFS-R?), you can see which signal block each train is located in. Even though I can imagine this can be determined with GPS, surely this is determined by the train with eurobalise or some other track-side signalling solution?
