As gamers, we tend to be very picky when it comes to performance; and for good reason, if you paid a premium for hardware, you'd expect a premium experience. Well, allow me to tell you a little tale of what happened to me, and my journey of "chasing that high": the glorious FPS that we all crave, and why I decided to cut back.
My PC setup was great: I had a Zotac 3070 Twin Edge OC paired with an Intel i7-10700k and 16gb of ram with one 1440p 144hz monitor and one 1080p 60hz monitor. The peripherals I used were a Razer Viper 4 Pro and a Razer Blackwidow 2013, with a deskmat covering my entire desk. Audio-wise, I had a GoXLR Mini that I used with either a AT-2020 or a Rode Podmic. I also have a PS5, to which I was able to figure out how to connect my PS5 audio to my GoXLR and control its volume using my faders. In short, I was spoiled. I had a setup that people dreamed of having, I worked hard to get to where I was at. Funny thing is, I wanted more. I wanted so much more.
I took the "OC" in my GPU name extremely seriously: I tried so hard to overclock that sucker, gave up and tried and tried again, only to notice my power limit was quite low, causing my PC to crash and restart on medium loads. I somehow saw a Reddit post about flashing a vBios onto my GPU. Completely ignoring everyone's warnings on forums, I flashed another 3070's vBios onto mine. Turns out, it gave me a very small performance boost! But in doing so, I overclocked my GPU so much that I fried my power supply.
The motherboard still works; I'm perfectly capable of booting windows using another PSU I had stored away, but it's not powerful enough to run any GPU's I have.
Now, after realizing what I've done to myself, and going through my PS5 settings, I'm realizing: I didn't need "the best" performance, I just needed to have fun playing the games I wanted to play. I'm perfectly fine with 60fps.
I'm even going beyond that and giving my OG Switch another chance.
