My MB died but not my drives. I keep $HOME on a separate drive from my OS. When I replaced the motherboard it couldn't boot the old Debian 10. But I wiped and installed 12 and everything pretty much Just Worked. The only major pain was reinstalling all my packages from the new repo, and I could do that as the need arose.
