The liberal tradition around the marketplace of ideas has common origins to their ideas around markets in general. The founding philosophies came about as these Europeans were eschewing the bible and the crown as the source of truth in the world. This was contemporary to the enlightenment scientific revolution. They were very excited about the unveiling of the universe through Newtonian mechanics, etc., as new frontiers to replace god and the king.
