I had not seen them really until I moved to North Carolina back in 2016.
We live in one of the cookie cutter neighborhoods and there is a small patch of woods at the end of the backyard and that's where they come from.
I would check the range map where you are at. I was surprised to learn that they are only in the western and central part of NC
