Agreed!
I learned English by reading English books and looking up definitions in an English dictionary (not English-French). I often ended up with 3-4 fingers holding pages in the dictionary because a definition would contain a word I didn't understand... built a somewhat acceptable vocabulary quite fast, grammar comes with usage later.
(yes, holding dictionary pages with my fingers... I'm THAT old.)
