I am not a pacificist. You don't get away from being a vassal state by abandoning your own defense and depending upon an empire for protection. I am also not interested in exchanging being a vassal of the United States for being a vassal of Russia. Things can always be even worse, and that would definitely be worse.
If you want to be taken seriously, on the world stage, you must speak softly and carry a big stick. European countries need a bigger stick. That is simply Realpolitik. The Americans, themselves, demanded we do this, for years and years. Even Obama didn't shut up about it. Hilarious, that they're now freaking out about it.
Europe, you need to defend yourselves and become truly independent. 😠

They thought our stronger defense just meant we'd buy more American weaponry and they'd make a lot of money on it. They didn't realize that being stronger and thinking more about mounting our own defense would make us less obedient, obsequious vassals, but here we are.
