So... here is something mildly counter-intuitive: I disabled line-wrapping in my text editor (`set nowrap` in vim) and I found that I very rarely need to look at what gets cut off. If I do, I have a mapping to quickly toggle it. But the rest of the time, it's out of the way and I don't have to figure out what displayed line belongs to what actual line. For text, I have it automatically add actual line breaks anyway. Try it!
