Ubuntu actually has this built in to its installer, or it did last time I saw it. If you're able to shrink the computer's NTFS partition to make room for your new one, it can be mounted at a specific place on the file tree so sometime can still access their old files. If you use a distro that uses BTRFS for root or /home, NTFS filesystems can be converted into BTRFS & then you can use that. I have no idea how stable this is though.
