How does an oligarchy remain in power in the 21st century? Is it by shutting down newspapers, and arresting political opponents? Why bother, if you can:
- capture major attention fiefdoms ("social media") and align them politically
- "flood the zone" with misinformation
- directly control some remaining news/information outlets by way of acquisition
- bully/penalize anyone with influence who steps out of line
- reward those who bend the knee with access & amplification.
