The real weirdness happened with Quake, Doom, and Castle Wolfenstein. Honestly Quake was one of my absolute favorite games and rivaled everything that has been made since. Fast paced, fps, with class based capabilities was a concept we hadn't seen before and it was sublimely glorious.
