I’ve got a pretty materialist explanation: neoliberal economics require women to work. it makes them miserable, but they do it because the alternative is to go homeless. but while it makes logical sense for men to take on women’s work in the same way women have taken on men’s work, the same mechanisms for enforcement don’t exist. instead of the family being in existential crisis from having half the income required to survive which would happen if the woman doesn’t take on the additional man’s role, the only immediate consequence to a man not taking on the additional woman's role is that the already miserable woman becomes more miserable. obviously there are other consequences, a worse relationship, increased divorce, unhappy children, etc, but it’s easier for men to be defer responsibility and they can get somewhat away with it, and most people in general avoid responsibility if they can get away with it.
tldr a woman unless she is very wealthy can’t say “I’m tired from raising these kids I don’t want to spend 10 hours getting ready for work, commuting, and working the job” but a man can say “I’m tired from 10 hours getting ready for work, commuting, and working the job, I don’t want to take care of these kids.”
