The lack of ambition is staggering. WW1 showed up how poorly educated many Brits were and prompted a post war education act. The dire state of housing in the 1920s and 30s brought about mass council house building. After WW2 there was a lot of rebuilding needed but still the govt was able to create the NHS, encourage local govt care homes and pass *and fund* another education act. Today's problems are minor by comparison but all our politicians compete to spend as little as possible
