I wouldn't put eschatology as less likely option. These psychopaths are fanatical, esoteric and outright into mind control of the masses. Same story since ancient Egypt. The priests are on other level: they profess the mind over matter. Though the public is taught that consciousness is an emergent property of the brain through school indoctrination and scientism.
