he was 6 years old when he started and 11 at the finale in the book. He was lied to and had no idea what he did until after the final events. At the point he was past the point of being physically and mentally exhausted and didn't know how to handle it for awhile. Movie did a poor job of walking you through his lofe and internal growth. Book is very different from movie and a very different story than starship troopers. Liked that book a lot too but haven't seen that movie.
