A little vignette from last night: got a 600ml beer bottle at the bar last night. A real dive by Brazil standards, no table service and no insulating sleeve - I had to hold the bottle myself! And I was firmly told to hold by the neck not the body lest I drop it (anything cold becomes wet with condensation instantly in Salvador). "I've been drinking beer from the bottle for 40 years, you can trust me" I said, but clearly this is a problem they regularly have.
When I got to the table I went to pour beer for Mestre Jaime. You don't keep a bottle to yourself in Brazil, beer is always shared with plastic cups. (Another sign of dive bar, the plastic cups were oversized). Probably because there were no beer cosies the beer was chilled to the point of having ice crystals in it. So Jaime said "hey this isn't beer, it's gelato!"
