while we’re asking for ponies, an 8-bit era trick is reprogramming the palette on the fly to exceed the maximum number of colors per frame.
Another pony would be a way to make ‘display lists’ for arbitrary mappings for starts of scan lines in memory. This allows smooth scrolling of a field, for example, without much cpu overhead.
