Go back 70 odd years and the Democratic Party, which was strong in the South, was racist and in favor of redistributive policies.
The Republican Party in the same time frame was mostly pro-civil rights, mostly northern, and mostly pro-business.
Watching the worst parts of both parties coalesce into the modern Republican Party has been interesting.
