I don't think we (staff) have any other recourse. Most people outside academia doesn't know the extent of the problem and how many jobs are being lost every day. Strikes get attention from the media.
Also, the only solution management is willing to consider is dismissing people, but never those on the top. They have decided that's the only solution, so strikes are about asking them to consider other options that do not completely destroy any chance for recovery.
