spent around two hours troubleshhoting why my girl’s laptop hanged at boot. long story short, memtest revealed around 32MB of faulty RAM that would either brick service startup or just throw a kernel panic. I ended up reserving those blocks of memory in kernel params (memmap can do that) and now everything works, I had other plans but at least I got to feel like a wizard… or my dad
it’s also making me glad that we put Linux on that laptop (it was an assignment for UNIX class to get some personal installation, VM or not) because if Windows bumped into it, I have no idea what the fuck we’d end up doing. probably just chuck it into a repair store
